For some people, hemroids are funny and maybe the source of a joke. And while it’s true that hemorrhoid trouble might not be the worst thing that could happen to a person, it can cause itching, anal bleeding and in some more extreme cases a great deal of pain and discomfort.

If you do have itching, discomfort when using the bathroom, blood on the toilet paper or in the fecal material or any pain in the anal area, you may potentially have a hemroid condition, but a medical exam is necessary to rule out any potentially more dangerous conditions. A medical profession with get a good look at the health of your colon by giving you either a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy. If you get a colonoscopy, the colon is viewed entirely, but in an sigmoidoscopy only 24 inches are seen.

I don’t think a colonoscopy is anyone’s idea of fun, yet it is a necessary exam to make sure you stay healthy. Plus, it is a safe and easy process. You should start getting colonoscopys at the age of 50 or at the age of 40 if you have a higher risk. If the colonoscopy results look good the first time then a follow up exam every few years will be recommended. The day before the colon exam when a heavy laxative is prescribed is the most difficult part of the process. The anal cavity is cleaned out with the help of a prescription laxative. A laxative of this strength cleans your entire bowel and you will need quick bathroom access. Now that the hard part is out of the way, you get to be sedated through the procedure itself.

The reason a visit to the doctor is recommended is to rule out the other more serious medical conditions that have similar symptoms to hemorrhoids. These can include colon cancer, polyps, rectal cancer, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis which are inflammatory bowel diseases. A tear around the anal cavity is called an anal fissure and infections around this area are referred to as anal abscesses. Both can be a source of problems needing treatment. Some conditions present with the same symptoms and need to be eliminated before a correct diagnosis can be made.

Since hemroid conditions are much more common than the other medical conditions, it is more likely than not that your diagnosis will be hemorrhoids, but a doctor’s visit is necessary before you start any hemroid treatment. Take care of yourself because you deserve it.
