For whatever reason, most people today care about their appearance. An underwhelming appearance, which can be determined by any of a number of factors, is likely to result in at least a small degree of social consequences and other problems, and the effects can often be devastating.
An individual’s appearance is affected most commonly by aging and genetics. When it comes to genetics, of course, different people have different experiences. Everyone’s features are unique, and this in itself can be worrisome for some people. Facial features aren’t the only aspect of the appearance affected by heredity. The benefits of diet and exercise are only part of what determines the shape of the body. In other words, even with a healthy diet and rigorous, regimented exercise, most people find it difficult to completely get rid of fat deposits from particular areas; these often include the legs, the torso, and the neck. Aging, of course, leaves its mark on everyone sooner or later.
In many cases, a cosmetic procedure is the only way to tackle these issues effectively. Luckily, the advancement of technologies and techniques means that cosmetic surgery is actually a not inconvenient way of approaching these issues. Virtually all aesthetic problems can be rectified through the use of cosmetic surgery.
Even though technology and education have a major impact today, cosmetic surgery is, in fact, an ancient concept. It is thought to have originally been developed in India in approximately 2000 BC. It wasn’t until the emergence of the Hollywood movie industry, though, that cosmetic surgery entered the popular lexicon; as today, many film actors and actresses gained their “sculpted” features at least in part through cosmetic surgery. Now, many cosmetic procedures are practiced around the world, and are affordable enough that millions of people have undergone cosmetic surgery in recent years.
In 2008 in the United States alone, over 1,760,000 cosmetic surgical procedures were performed (all data collected by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery). Although women accounted for 90 percent of all recipients, the number of men undergoing cosmetic surgical procedures continues to increase, which may be at least partly because corresponding stigmas have diminished and males are now judged on their looks as well. The most popular cosmetic surgeries are breast augmentation, liposuction, blepharoplasty, which is cosmetic surgery for the eyelids, abdominoplasty (also known as the “tummy tuck”), and breast reduction, while the most common procedures for men are liposuction, rhinoplasty, which is cosmetic surgery for the nose, blepharoplasty, gynecomastia (male breast reduction), and hair transplantation.
In terms of age, the group most likely to seek cosmetic surgery are people aged 35-50; this suggests that aging is the biggest factor which leads to people taking an interest in cosmetic surgery, as genetics or features present from birth are, in most cases, taken care of earlier than this. Over 70% of individuals state that they are not embarrassed to say that they have undergone cosmetic surgery, which shows that cosmetic surgery is socially accepted.
Cosmetic surgical procedures themselves take different amounts of time. Similarly, the amount of time required to recuperate from each operation corresponds to the extensiveness of the operation itself; some operations take as little as two weeks of recovery time before the patient can get back to his or her previous daily activities, while certain procedures require months of recovery time. While recovering, it is imperative that the patient adheres to the directions detailed by the surgeon with regard to treatment of the area (which may involve using dressings, compression garments, ointments and so on), what sort of forms of activity to avoid (for example, strenuous physical activity usually has to be avoided for at least two weeks), wardrobe considerations (after any type of surgery, loose-fitting clothing is usually recommended; after a face lift, the patient should wear button-down shirts because t-shirts and sweatshirts need to be pulled over the face to be worn and can cause damage to the face when being put on), and dietary and similar considerations (smoking must be ceased following any type of surgery).
Any type of surgery involves some risk of complications. Scarring will result from any method which requires incisions. Swelling may remain in the short term, but swelling or irritation that persists after the period indicated by the surgeon indicates a problem. Some individuals will experience an allergic reaction to anaesthetic, which is used in most surgical procedures. Individuals with certain medical conditions, especially cardiovascular issues, may not be eligible for cosmetic surgery. Consult with a physician if you would like to find out if cosmetic surgery is an appropriate option for you.
