For continued wear, it is essential to have a good contact lens solution for those who use contact lens. A contact lens solution is used to clean, maintain, and extend the life of your contact lens.

For a clearer vision and comfortable wear, a contact lens solution should be able to clean your contact lens thoroughly. There are several types of contact lens solution available in the market. Essentially, a person should know how to find the right solution for their contact lenses.

The first type of a contact lens solution is the cleaning solution, it takes away dirt, mucus, and debris that build up during use. To avoid breaking the lenses the wearer should rub it with care. Hydrogen peroxide is the main ingredient in this type of cleaning solution.

This second solution should only be used after the first solution. The lenses are then rinsed with a saline contact lens solution. This is used to counteract the effect of the hydrogen peroxide from the first cleaning solution.

The purpose of the third contact lens solution is to disinfect the lenses. This solution kills and inhibits bacteria, fungus and other harmful microorganisms that stay on the lenses and can irritate and infect the eyes. An enzymatic cleaner can remove substances like protein. It is a tablet form solution and typically dropped to the solution and stored overnight.

There are also multi-purpose solutions, it is generally an all-in-one solution. Cleaners, disinfectants and protein removers are in one bottle. There’s no need to use enzyme tablets, all it needs is a saline solution after the contact lens is stored overnight.

Lastly, another contact lens solution that is used is the rewetting solution. If the lenses are being used for long periods of time, these drops are used as a lubricant. Their primary purpose is to keep the eyes moist and enhance the comfort of contact lens usage.

As a final reminder, always discard a contact lens solution once its over the expiration date and frequently ask your ophthalmologist for advice regarding contact lens maintenance.
