Thirty three per cent of Australians in full-time jobs won’t take one day’s leave this year although they have a vast range of top-class holiday destinations at their fingertips
The country’s largest study into annual leave accrual done by Tourism Australia show that nearly 60 per cent of full-time Aussie workers don’t use up their four weeks leave entitlement each year. Many of them have eight weeks or more accrued leave.
It was also found that Australians work longer hours than anyone else in the developed world.
Instead of going on a long family holiday to the coast, people are choosing to take shorter, weekend breaks. The global financial crisis has also been a major contributor to the slowdown in domestic and international tourism. While many people view a weekend getaway as a suitable break, health experts don’t agree.
Experts agree that taking regular holidays is essential for good health.Researchers from the State University of New York at Oswego did a study on over twelve thousand men between the ages of 35 and 57 and found that men who took annual holidays reduced their overall risk of dying by about twenty per cent. They also reduce their risk of death by heart disease by as much as 30 per cent.
Having world-class vacation destinations around the corner, Aussies should have every reason to take leave, not skip it.Even the most fatigued, stressed-out traveller in WA can’t help but be inspired by the abundant attractions and quality accommodation in the Margaret River area. With its stunning coastline, pristine beaches, world-renowned surfing, wineries, restaurants, amazing natural attractions and wide variety of holiday accommodation, Margaret River is the perfect getaway destination.
We need to listen to the experts who all tell us that taking holidays is beneficial to our health.According to a study done in 2005 by the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin, women who didn’t take regular breaks were 2 to 3 times more likely to be depressed than those who took regular holidays.
Australians are particularly bad in terms of skipping holidays.Corporate men (between the ages of 35 – 49) have accumulated the most leave, and half have kids under 12.
Families need holidays, says Margaret River accommodation agency, Seaside Holiday Home Accommodation, which has over sixty hand-picked holiday homes in its portfolio. “Just as adults need regular holidays to de-stress and recharge the batteries, kids need time in a relaxed environment so they can communicate and bond together with the family. By renting holiday accommodation in Dunsborough, Yallingup or anywhere in the Margaret River area, families can enjoy a peaceful, private environment which is beneficial to everyone’s health and happiness.”
