News agencies seem to make it a policy to over-dramatize everything they report on. That certainly describes their coverage of the swine flu situation. It amounts to fear mongering at its worst.

I don’t want to dismiss any concern whatsoever, but most reports seemed designed to maximize fear while providing no useful information.

Right now I want to give you a clear picture about the swine flu, let you know if the situation is really as serious as the media is making it out to be and most importantly tell you the steps you need to take to protect stay healthy even if everyone else is getting sick.

News reporters commonly compare the potential of the current situation to the devastating influenza epidemic of 1918. Let’s be clear about that right away. It is extremely unlikely that the situation will ever reach that extreme.

For one thing, we have much better public health and medical systems worldwide than existed 90 years ago.

In addition the current virus lacks a protein that was present in the 1918 virus and seems to needed before a virus can cause serious epidemics.

This virus is spread like any other influenza virus: from person to person.

People commonly think of viruses on their hands from contaminated surfaces and then transmit the virus to the respiratory system when they touch their face.

There were two very simple yet very effective things you can do to stay healthy. One is to practice good hygiene. another way to increase your chances of staying healthy is to keep your immune system is strong as possible.

Why don’t you become an obsessive-compulsive, frequent hand washing is the single best thing you can do to protect yourself. I don’t recommend antibacterial soap. It’s] no more effective than plain soap there may be some downsides to spreading the chemicals in the antibacterial soaps around.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers also work well. Use them when you can’t get  to soap and water.

A strong and healthy immune system is a crucial part of your defense against disease. I found a website that outlines how to do that. Check it out at:   Keep Your Immune System Strong

In fact, you may want to visit the home page of that site to get lots more information on all aspects of wellness. You find that at:  http://www.jfmccaffreymd.com/

I particularly enjoyed the article:  Improve Your Worldview

Take a look at I think you see why I like it – especially after my opening comments about the news media.

I hope this stay well and avoid panicking because of the media coverage.
