Bedwetting is a common problem, particularly in young children, and many parents go through a period of having to tackle the problem with their child.Enuresis is the medical term given to the act of wetting the bed.Bedwetting happens a lot among kids who are trying to get used to using a potty and sleeping without the use of a nappy.  But even if it carries on beyond this point there are various ways to make sure the problem is resolved.

Obviously the first and most important task is to make sure that the child is not told off for wetting the bed.  The very fact that they do wet the bed indicates they have no control over it, and cannot get up in time to go to the toilet as they would normally.Since stress can trigger bedwetting in the first place, scolding a child for doing it can make things worse. But enuresis can also be triggered by various medical issues.

Going to the toilet before going to bed each night can help prevent instances of bedwetting from occurring.Consider whether your child’s age has an effect too; if your child is currently potty training then nappies would be the best solution during the night for a while.  If the child is older and they are having problems staying dry throughout the night, you may need to try other methods such as reducing any fluids they have not long before they go to bed.  Different children may respond to different methods, so be sure not to give up if the first solution doesn’t work.

Make sure you keep an eye on your child to watch for physical symptoms which could trigger the bedwetting.  If your child is experiencing any discomfort while urinating that could be indicative of some kind of infection.Normal toileting habits will be resumed once any infection has been treated. You could also use a bedwetting alarm which goes off if the child wets the bed.

Finally, make sure you stay positive because it will help your child get through the situation, no matter why it began in the first place.  If they feel guilty or upset about wetting the bed, a negative attitude towards it can only make matters worse and the problem is then likely to last for a longer period of time.It is vital to keep in mind that bedwetting can be prevented and stopped, so stay positive and explore all the options.  But in either case bedwetting is almost always a temporary problem that will eventually go away, leaving the child able to sleep through the night with no further problems in the future.
