Unlike the daily wear contact lens, an extended wear contact lens may be worn for longer periods of time. The Food and Drugs Administration approved these extended wear contact lenses, without removal for up to seven days.
New innovations to extended wear are being developed. A newer type of soft contact lens material, the silicone hydrogel is so permeable, meaning they allow more oxygen to the cornea; the FDA approves them to be worn for a month without removal. These lenses can stay in your eyes for a month which is why it is called “continuous wearâ€.
Eye care practitioners are dubious with the use of extended wear contact lens because it increases the risk of infections, particularly to those who wears it overnight. Exrended wear contact lenses risks the eyes from organisms that might be trapped on the lenses. As we all know, most micro organisms thrive in warm and moist environment, and the cornea is the best place as it lacks oxygen whenever a contact lens is worn. It may only start as pink eye but if it is left untreated it may lead to serious conditions like blindness.
The actual reason why an extended wear contact lens is making a comeback is because of the growing popularity of disposable contact lenses. Improper cleaning and sanitation is often the reason why people acquire eye infections, there are proteins, lipids and other deposits that are impossible to remove. The contact lenses becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and whenever the individual wears the lenses again, it could cause infection and inflammation of the eyes. Today, the contact lenses are disposed after use and never to be used again, avoiding infection from contaminants.
Aside from improper cleaning and disinfecting, the lifestyle you are living may also cause infection in the eyes. Infections caused by exposure from smoke, wearing the contact lens while swimming may cause various and serious complications. You must ask an eye doctor whether an extended contact lens is appropriate for your needs.
